Thank you for taking the time to walk us through the thought process of creating a web site.  You are absolutely right that before we go throwing ourselves into the process, we need to think through exactly what we want the web site to do for us and what attributes the site should have, our goals for the site, etc. I need to do more homework and actually start visualizing and creating content in Word or Publisher or whatever just to get my ideas down.  Then I'll take the next step and hire someone experienced to do the design angle.  Thank you all again for your insight.
